I was conflicted throughout reading this book, but ultimately I did enjoy it. I would advise checking trigger warnings on this book as I think the way it is written can hit pretty hard on trigger points. What I loved in this book was the exploration of the value we place on romantic versus platonic relationships, given the central relationship in the book is platonic. The story was emotional, and well-paced given its sweeping timeline. I did not love the handling of mental health in all cases, but that is to a degree a matter of personal preference. I would definitely recommend this book, however would caution to read when you feel fairly stable in your own mental health. (Specific minor spoilers hidden with spoiler tag)

I was honestly particularly upset by the use of a background character's suicide to propel the plot of main characters who did not even know her. That felt emotionally manipulative and exploitive to me and it was a part of the book I struggled to move past. Similarly, I felt the treatment of abortion was quite glib and did not add much.

 A thoroughly accurate depiction of the nuances of the technological world and real life, this book was something I was fully able to indulge in from Beginning to end. The book talks about the deeply rooted friendship of Sam Masur and Sadie Green, being ripped apart and glued back together, through a shared love of Video Games. Ranging from conversations about Illnesses, Disabilities, Family and Friendships, Homophobia, Patriarchy, Women in STEM, Loss, Grief, Toxic Relationships and Gun Violence, this book easily found it’s way to my heart. Being a student in tech myself, deriving comfort in shared experiences is not something I’ve been able to do in literature, until now.

I love this book. New top tier book. The writing is *chefs kiss* it flows so smoothly and gently pulls the story where it needs to go. I love the characters; Sam, Sadie, and Marx are the found family I want. I know next to nothing about video games and computers but that didn’t matter. This book was about video games but more so it was about stories and love and the people in our lives.

II wanted to underline something on almost every page. I felt genuine pain when The characters hurt. I felt so deeply for these characters and I feel like I learned things from this. What a beautiful heart wrenching story. 

There’s always a healthy skepticism when a book is recommended to me with high praise. I went into this thinking “it’s about video games. How much can I relate to a book about video games without having grown up playing them?” But this book really pushed me in a lot of ways. I hope to revisit it in the future. 

Still a lot to be worked through in terms of my relationship to creating things and this book made me realize that. But what I really appreciate about it, was that it acknowledges both sides of the coin: the part where it takes an immense amount of work, struggle, failure to create something like film scores, videos games or even just writing a good story. But it also shows a powerful/meaningful life doesn’t have to be one filled with the pursuit of these creations and that there are more important things in the world. 

Some tough pills to swallow. Some wonderful language to study and learn from. I hope I read this again soon.
