Sublime. An expansive novel spanning decades - my favourite kind - exploring some of my favourite themes, plus some new ones to me. You don't need to be a gamer to love this book, Zevin made me feel nostalgic for games I've never even played. Just gorgeous reflections on friendship, love, grief, disability, work, passion, and told with such creativity.

Jennifer Kim is also a brilliant narrator, her voice is lovely to listen to!

I loved this book. I’m always nervous to read something with so much hype, but I was pretty sure I was going to like this one. It’s about video games, but it’s much more about the people who make them. Sam and Sadie both feel so real. They make bad choices and they hurt each other and they spend so much time not speaking, but they also love each other in such an honest way. I can’t say enough good things about this book

I loved this book so much! Great characters, cozy feelings mixed with heavy topics, and a nice insight into the gaming industry. It's full of symbolism and details too,
Spoilerthe chapters in the part were Sam and Sadie drift apart being separated in parts a and b was -brilliant-, for example
. Great read, would highly recommend! Do mind the trigger warnings though.
The design of the book itself was nice too: beautiful cover, and the book lies open beautifully.

It's really hard for me to rate this book. At times, it feels like a five. Then it takes an unexpected turn, making it a one. I had expected it to be a popcorn read, but turned out it pained me a lot. I often love books that made me cry, but I can't decipher the tears I shed were more me or more the book. When I cried, I felt it's a betrayal to my favorite books because I cannot distinguish them with this book by the amount of tears I shed. This book doesn't deserve that much tears, but there I was, weeping at 3am wailing 'I hate it' then struggled with sleep because my nose was clogged due to the tears.

Here's the summary of my journey with this book.
I loved the title and the cover so much.
I picked it up months after I knew this book.
I liked it very much in the beginning. How they met in a hospital when they were little then reconnect in junior year. I woke up one day (Sunday) and said "I think I really like my new book".
Then it slid down until it took an unexpected turn that I can never forgive.
SpoilerSADIE REGRETS HER ABORTION!! WTF. I pity women who regret their abortion, but I cannot forgive an author makes her made up character regret her abortion. It's too political and WRONG. I'd open a champagne for Sadie's abortion. She's so much better off without that cell and it spoils Ichigo forever, and this book.

TRIGGER: VOMIT. TRIGGER: VOMIT. TRIGGER: VOMIT. Too much unnecessary throw-up scenes. Please put it on the cover next time, it's an actual phobia.
VII: The NPC and IX: Pioneers were ingenious in story-telling skills. I did't like them more but I have to say it's refreshing and novel.
Then mostly I just felt sad for Sam. Maybe a little for Marx, but mostly Sam.
The end.

I love Sam but Sam loves Sadie. I like Marx a little. I don't like Sadie but I understand her. Mostly I'm sad for Sam, angry for Sam but there's nothing I can do. I know this book is supposed to be about a mutual friendship, soulmates maybe. But to me, as my tag indicates, I felt it's more an unrequited love, unequal relationship at least. Before I picked it up, the description tricked me into thinking the relationship is mutual love, but for some reasons they didn't end up together, or not after years gone back, which's my favorite trope in a romance - the one that got away when they are in love with each other, everyone knows they are meant to be together and they always know the other loves them back. But no. Sadly it's not a case. The unrequited love Sam has for Sadie broke my heart. I hate the book for that, in addition to the anti-abortion part that I despise.

Usually I don't feel more for the male main character, I feel a bit guilty when I do. I dislike when an author give us a likable male lead and even a male support character but the female lead not so much.

It's the best book I've read about disability. I especially liked how the author shined light on post-amputation fantom pain.

Some minor things.
I loved the three Anna Lee part. It's beautifully constructed.
I liked Don & Bon.
I can't feel Sam is half Asian and Marx is Asian except when it's explicitly written. Especially Marx always feels white to me. No matter how many time Asian come up, I pictured him as a 6 feet something white guy. A good example of Asian characters are Don & Bon, Anna Lee, and the most beautifully written Robin in Babel.

This is easily one of the best books this year, if not the best fiction.  There were many points when I was moved to tears.  It is absolutely beautifully written and the narrator's voice (for the audiobook) was perfect and calming.

I honestly don't know how to write a review for this and do it justice, I am at a loss of words.  It is a story of great friendship, love, and trials.  Every character had their complexities and were not always, if at all, likeable
Spoilerexcept Marx, Marx is perfect
, but that is reality.

There was never a dull point of this book, I was interested and engaged the entire time.  The choice to show their friendship over decades was refreshing and I also really liked that we didn't switch POVs every chapter, I feel like that concept has been played out.  The video game nerd in me loved that the author did their research on video game history and what it takes to make video games.  While I don't like the miscommunication trope, I didn't find myself frustrated.  I understood why they weren't communicating because the characterization was so well done.

I normally don't go into books with expectations, but John Green said it was one of his favorite books of this year, so the need to read it was urgent.  John Green didn't let me down.  It was truly an honor to read Sadie, Sam, and Marx's journey.
