First off let's get this out of the way: Sam is modern day au Kaz Brekker. LISTEN. LISTENNNN. I know i'm right. I could write a comperative essay on them. But for the sake of keeping this review less chaotic I will not do it rn.

I was surprised by how much this is a story about theater; I knew it was about games and love but I haven't read any shakespeare apart from a midsummer night's dream and I do know, like, alot of the plots from alot of the plays, because its, you know, shakespeare. But I didn't recognize the title as a reference so it took me by pleasant surprise as a theatre girlie <3 !! I love to see love for the theatre explored in symbiosis with video games like this it was really inchresting to me and I enjoyed it alot so YEAH

(Sorry its 10pm and im so tired it feels like 1am and I need to sleep)

I LOVE the exploration of cronic pain and (medical) trauma and dissociation and escapism and internalised ableism like those things were very connected and felt so real
And I could relate heavily to how characters in this book would step outside of their bodies either out of a desire not to be in them or involuntarily bcs of a traumatic experience like YEAH me TOO bro ✌
And like yea the author was definitely doing some of that "look how clever I am connecting these symbols I used earlier in the plot to this plot development later on" and it was also visible in word use which made me kinda feel like ok I know u are trying to be so clever rn and its a bit MUCH (very much in typical john green fashion so I guess thats why he loves it sm ???) BUt I dont really care like honestly fair enough if u write a spectacular novel like this ur allowed to be pretentious about it ,, i'd do the same thing fully so! It doesn't take away from my rating. This is a nitpicky thing either way like ,,, the book is SO beautiful like truly amazing-

I will come back to this review with favorite quotes!! I have lots

Oh ALSO ! Couldn't stop comparing sadie and sam to the mcs from mythic quest (my brain is tired im blanking on their names rn) but yk I think mythic quest characters are even more unlikable definitely preferred sadie and sam although ofc mythic quest is meant to be lighthearted and also there were very many overlapping themes especially about misogyny and interpersonal relationships between women in gaming and I think thats interesting !!!!

Go read this !!!! And watch mythic quest !!

I felt v much like this book would be a good one to recommend to fans of the seven husbands of evelyn hugo bcs this book crushed me in the same way that one did it just gives me simular vibes I cannot explain but trust me !!! Im right

I was conflicted throughout reading this book, but ultimately I did enjoy it. I would advise checking trigger warnings on this book as I think the way it is written can hit pretty hard on trigger points. What I loved in this book was the exploration of the value we place on romantic versus platonic relationships, given the central relationship in the book is platonic. The story was emotional, and well-paced given its sweeping timeline. I did not love the handling of mental health in all cases, but that is to a degree a matter of personal preference. I would definitely recommend this book, however would caution to read when you feel fairly stable in your own mental health. (Specific minor spoilers hidden with spoiler tag)

SpoilerI was honestly particularly upset by the use of a background character's suicide to propel the plot of main characters who did not even know her. That felt emotionally manipulative and exploitive to me and it was a part of the book I struggled to move past. Similarly, I felt the treatment of abortion was quite glib and did not add much.

Loved this book. I loved the Shakespeare woven throughout, even in the most simple sentences. I loved getting to know and love these flawed and tormented characters. And I love this book explores love in all its forms - parent/child, parent/grandparent, deep deep friendship, partners, business partners, hobbies, theatre, art, simple beauty, life. How many times can I use the word love in one review?

I love this book. New top tier book. The writing is *chefs kiss* it flows so smoothly and gently pulls the story where it needs to go. I love the characters; Sam, Sadie, and Marx are the found family I want. I know next to nothing about video games and computers but that didn’t matter. This book was about video games but more so it was about stories and love and the people in our lives.

Did I read this book because John Green recommended it? Yes. However, I did not realize it was going to be so incredibly sad. Of course, the writing is brilliant, and Gabrielle Zevin has just masterfully crafted this novel. I simply was not prepared for the emotional whiplash it would put me through. I had to pause multiple times during the end of the book to remind myself that these characters weren’t real (as if that helps at all - since the circumstances they find themselves in are certainly real and vivid).

Watch out for the trigger warnings with this one, but it is definitely a beautifully crafted narrative.

I want to clarify that I am not a fiction reader- I read fantasy and I read young adult. I want to escape reality and have fun. This book was the opposite of anything I normally love to read, BUT this book will probably be in my top 5 favorite books of 2022.

If you want to big cry- heartbroken cry, laugh cry, angry cry- this book is a perfect choice for you.

If you want to sit with characters who understand how difficult it is to exist but are also trying to create something meaningful and beautiful despite the difficulties of the world- this book is for you.

If you have lost friends that were not lovers but weren't just friends and weren't just coworkers- this book is for you.

Bring the tissue box and dive in. This book was beautiful.

CW: Gun violence, homophobia, misogyny, and other things that one might have to deal with while existing in the USofA from the 1980s to the 2010s.

P.S. I read this book because I read Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac back in the late 2000s.
