I really enjoyed this book. It surprised me over and over. I really enjoyed the use of the footnote as another aspect of the story, and wish I could have delved more deeply into what was going on there. Would definitely recommend.

a little disappointed because it seems to be slower than i thought. wasn’t super into it but wanted to give it a try, and see if it speeds up. then it just sat on my nightstand for 4 months

I found the ending a little bit confusing/harried. However, I loved it. Read it based on a recommendation, and I'm very glad I did. Creating a trans and queer narrative out of a real historical character and pairing it with the academic's annotations and thoughts was very clever. Enjoyed learning a lot of slang, too!

The first half of the book has some beautiful explorations of how someone can step more into themselves (particularly into a trans, queer, or otherwise non-conforming body), when propelled by the love, appreciation, and accepting of another. Beautiful scenes and insights.

This just wasn't capturing me- I will probably return to it at some point.

I am not sure how the heck to describe this book.
You have to read it, it's more of an experience.
It's neat that it continues the literary tradition of penny dreadful type books.
The characters are not very likeable, but they sure are interesting (read: insane)
Some parts, with the narrator, a modern day transcriber of the manuscript, are pretty sad
This book is kinda batshit all around.

Confessions of the Fox by Jordy Rosenberg is truly something else. It is wonderfully written #ownvoices metafiction that tells the tale of early eighteenth century thief, Jack Sheppard, and his lover Bess.

In this retelling, Jack is transgender, as is the scholar who is annotating the manuscript. This annotation leads to two very different stories running simultaneously throughout the book and as a self-confessed sucker for footnotes, I adored this.

If you decide to pick up a copy of Confessions of the Fox, be aware that it is NOT YA and that it has some very sexually graphic wording. Other than that it's a really interestingly different read.

Many thanks to @atlanticbooks for sending me a free review copy of Confessions of the Fox!
