HIGHLY RECOMMEND A good book that i struggled to get through near the end.

The authors notes were a big part of the story and i liked that but it really dragged me down near the end because the small text was hard to concentrate on and made me forget what was going on in the main story.

Interesting piece to talk about with others – and it definitely expanded the boundaries of the types of things I have read. My summary to others usually went something like this: "So, it's story of trans people living in the 1800s, or 1700s ,or sometime, but then there's a framed narrative of an editor - who himself is trans - who is editing the document and you get to read his footnotes... so you kind of get an insider's perspective on it all... plus there's a slight then and now comparison. And it's kind of about Pirates and urine." Which I think is a really fair and hopefully intriguing explanations. I did HATE IT at first.... but slowly the pirate loves story got to me.

This book was much more deep and complicated than I expected. Not a lighthearted historical queer heist and love story at all. I found myself a bit annoyed in the beginning about modern touchstones of the trans masculine experience imposed on a historical narrative: binding, top surgery, taking testosterone. We know from historical accounts of trans men that this was not how it worked. But then the novel takes a twist that gets that explained and I really liked it. Also, one can always get my nerdy heart with lots of footnotes and citations from other authors. Another book that presumably is set in the here and now, but here and now is a neoliberal hell scape dystopia- see 'how I won a nobel price', 'your driver is waiting', 'big swiss' and 'my year of rest and relaxation'. Lots of body horror and gore though.
