NYT Notable Books 2019: 19/100
This book was a solid reminder of how American the NYT lists are. While this was a mostly solid read, it was on such a niche topic that really is only relevant to the US. However, Packer wrote about Holbrooke in a way that made him seem like a quintessential American hero and that certainly added a lot to the book. I knew almost nothing about the international events Holbrooke was involved in (the Vietnam War, Bosnia, etc.), so I definitely learned a lot, but it was overwhelming at times. Holbrooke did a ton in his career, so there was a lot to cover, but at points the book felt unnecessarily dense. However, it was a solid read and if you're into American political affairs, it might be worth the read.
