2.5 stars. This book was a rollercoaster. I expected it to be a cute fluffy read, but that's not it at all. Much of the story takes a different turn, rather than following the original Pride & Prejudice plot.

Hara is a sports reported given the chance of a lifetime to make a name for herself interviewing one of the biggest stars in basketball. Only problem is that her father is in prison for running a sports gambling ring that almost destroyed professional sports, so she has an uphill battle. Then a huge series of crazy events happen once she gets to Boston.

I really wanted to like this book and I was excited to get into it. However, I didn't really believe the dialogue (there are never this many people fishing about how hot someone is randomly) or the narration. There was a lot of telling, not showing, happening as well. I think there were too many conflicts going on and too much intrigue.

I struggle to recommend this book, but if you like mystery/thriller stories, you might enjoy this story.

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for providing an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

First and foremost, I am a sucker for pride and prejudice reimaginings even if the story is loosely tied or based in the idea of the original. This one was not an exact copy but there were just enough tastes of Austen that made it fun!

It isn’t my favorite p&p inspired piece but it was enjoyable! Started light and continued to get heavier and heavier in tone until turning itself from the romance I expected into a thriller of sorts.

Both characters were and some supporting had good development and with both main POVs it helped develop the attraction to a believable but not entirely palpable level.

A nice break from my terrible/wonderful hallmark-Esque Christmas novels.

I love, adore, swoon for all things Jane Austen. Movie adaptions, spin-offs, and of course, retellings. I have this need to have it all in my life. When I saw that this was available, I needed it! I love the whole concept, it's contemporary and diverse.
The Wrong Mr. Darcy has so much potential. I liked most of it but at the end, it just wasn't my cup of tea. There were some missed opportunities. I wish there had been more character development and more background for chemistry with the characters. The hate to love is not a smooth transition. I missed that first proposal moment where you finally see that Darcy is into Elizabeth but her anger and resentment ultimately denies him.
TW - language and skippable steam

TWs // gun violence, suicide attempt, blood, miscarriage, murder, prison violence, cheating, head injury resulting from a fall down stairs

This book...didn't know what it was doing. Romance, conspiracy, medical issues, all smushed into a vague Pride and Prejudice retelling didn't really come out well.

We follow Hara, who is a small town reporter looking for her big break. She gets it when she gets the chance to interview the elusive basketball player Charles Butler. On that trip she also meets teammate Derek Darcy, whom she immediately butts heads with. But all that pales in comparison to the rollercoaster of events that Hara stumbles into by following one story.

Not going to lie, I wanted to DNF this book up until the 50% mark. Practically nothing happened. The only reason I finished it was because I had requested it for review. The back half wasn't even that cohesive, just a series of unbelievable events one after the other, getting more and more ridiculous until it ends with an explosive finale that...still made no sense?

The main issue I had was the writing. It wasn't that engaging, it was awkward at times, and the in your face "LOOK IM BEING WOKE ABOUT SEXISM" just felt out of place. But really, the plot line was just so convenient. Hara doesn't hardly DO anything, opportunities and plot points that progress the story just keep falling into her lap. It's hard to root for a heroine who does the absolute minimum and somehow gets all the reward.

I will give the book this: it's got tons of racial diversity. Hara is half black, half Japanese, almost all side characters are POC and there is some good discussion on the diaspora at one point. (Although she has an Italian character speak Spanish at one point and then Italian later on, which confused me).

I was so excited to be approved for this because I thought it would be a fun retelling, but in reality, it's a fairly boring, wannabe thriller that tries to do too many things at once. If you're looking for a fun romance and came across this because of the cute cover, keep scrolling.

I thought this was a really good book and believe that a number of the bad reviews have to do with perceptions of the author rather than the book itself. It is loosely inspired by Pride and Prejudice, but don't expect it to be a replica. I liked the pacing of the book and how events unfolded. I honestly didn't expect the ending but I thought it was really well-done. There are small inaccuracies that should have been caught or worked around, but overall, I think it was really well done. I enjoyed the story and would recommend to other readers.

2.5 stars rounded up.

What I liked: the story is good. Not great, but entertaining overall if a little predictable. I loved that it was set in Boston, one of my favorite cities.

What I didn’t like: first let’s start with the whole Mr. Darcy name. This is not a retelling of Pride & Prejudice and I feel like the character is only named Mr. Darcy so that all the Jane-ite’s will buy/read the book. Not a great idea because most Jane-ite’s I know would hate this book! Next, the characters are not very well developed and there’s just too much going on! Basketball, reporting, cheating (in multiple ways), miscarriages, murder. It was a lot! And lastly, stick with a name-the back and forth between Hara and The reporter, and Derek and The basketball player, was ridiculous! And these are educated people but the way they talked was awful! And very distracting!

Overall, I did think the plot had some good things about it, but the author needs to work on tightening up the story.

I received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I have never written a novel, and I've never written anything whilst juggling careers as a reality tv star and social media influencer. Lozada and her co-writer Lorincz got it done.

A lot happened, and it was almost soapy and campy in a good way. I liked the investigative journalism aspect of the story, and the relationship between Hara and fellow reporter Eddie.

Overall, however, this is not a very good book. It takes more than some character names, often confusing epigrams, and an enemies to lovers narrative between a slightly posh hero and a scrappy heroine to evoke Austen. The writing is really stilted, Hara is somehow an up and coming sports reporter who knows very little about sports or journalism, and the dialogue between Charles and Derek is an uncomfortable version of "urban" smack talk.

I was superbly excited when I saw the title of this book, YESSSSS to Mr. Darcy even if he's the wrong one. I'm also a complete and utter sucker for an illustrated cover and this one is the cutest. Unfortunately the cute ended with the cover of the book. I really expected a light hearted romcom and instead ended up with an angsty, overly dramatic story with miscarriages, sexual harassment, and miscommunications galore. This just wasn't what I expected at all.

Thank you to Netgalley and St. Martin's press for an advanced digital copy of the book for my honest review.
