It was an odd experience to want to know what’s going to happen next but also despise almost every decision made by every character. There were SO many battles that it got muddy in the middle.  Trying to remember which battle they were referring to later made the book tricky to follow at times. I think that experience would be different reading it in print. I’m excited to see where the third book takes the story… hopefully to some moral evolution but also revolution.

Hard to read but hard to stop. I don’t always enjoy politics, but here it worked for me because you don’t know who to trust or which side should win.

Rin is frustratingly rash and impulsive, but there are consequences for her actions every time (even when I might expect another book to let her off easy). She’s the main character, but is not a hero. I like that.

Holy shit took me long enough but it was worth every extra minute!!

Again the writing and pace of the book is perfect every page was a page turner very delicious.

I knew the damn Hesperians were bad the minute they came sailing in on their ship with their fucking guns all high a mighty. One could hope for once white colonizing bastards refrain from taking another country for the “better good”. But that shows how realistic it all was, how Rin and all of Nikra were fighting the wrong enemy.

Snakes can hide anywhere and it was Daji. Honestly when she offered the alliance in the beginning with Rin I thought I’d be a good idea and it WAS!!!

Nezha is a two faced bitch. And Rin is in her struggle era. Off to the next book 🫶🏻 just found out I can use emojis

Fav quote among many~
“What a relief to know that the world is supposed to make sense, and that if it didn’t, he would one day be justly compensated”

This series is so far everything I could ever want in a story - from the epic battles to the friendships, relationships, and the moral grayness of all the characters. I fail to have words to describe the feelings this series has invoked in me thus far, it’s given me chills and nearly brought me to tears. Most spectacular at all is Rin’s character growth throughout - from starting the novel as somebody wishing to be removed from her responsibilities over others to finally answering to herself. Though she is not perfect by any means, you realize just how young she is when making life altering decisions, and you essentially grow up with her as a reader. It is baffling how well Kuang shows her growth and development. This book threw me for a loop, and I loved that you’re coming to all these realizations about who the ‘bad guys’ are along with Rin. The enemy flips at least 6 times in this book, and throughout it all R.F Kuang shows you why they are the way they are and how history has led to this situation. This author is a master, and I love her mind. Excited is a loose term for what I know will inevitably be a soul crushing conclusion for the third book, but I can’t wait to see what Kuang does next.

Such a goid sequal. Loved the friendship between Kitay and Rin. Getting background on so many characters, Nezha specificly, was so good and needed. Cried at her reunion with her brother. Mind the tw's
