Heartfelt, whimsical, and deceivingly simple, The Iron Man earns its praise as one of "the greatest of modern fairy tales." Being a huge fan of The Iron Giant, which was inspired by this story, I'm glad to have finally gotten around to it.

The pacing is great, and is top tier bedtime story pace. From what I understand, this is a story that Hughes created to help his children cope with the suicide of their mother/his wife, Sylvia Plath. While the real-life story of Plath's death and the factors surrounding it, including the role Hughes himself played in it, is certainly grave and complex, with it in mind, the story of the Iron Man becomes that much more tender.

The re-read value on this one is high, and is one I hope to one day read to my own children so that they might also be better equipped and prepared to brave the dragons in their lives.

An interesting thoughtful story. Which just leaves me with the question of where had the iron man been before? Where was he returning from?

The 4 stars are for the story. Poetic, exciting, emotional - great writing.
I wasn't overwhelmed by the illustrations in this edition though.
