I loved this book so much. I have never had a book make me cry this much towards the end. You grow to love the characters throughout their hardships during ww2 and the relationships they establish with each other, as well as the missed connections.

Trigger warning: Theres a lot of descriptions of traumatic events and actions during ww2 and nazi invasion in france. I know its historical fiction but it’s still traumatic nonetheless.

Theres a lot of sisterhood and motherhood themes. Its an inspiring story revolved around strong women. The POV switches to 3 main points. One of the sisters retelling the story as an elder, one sister during the war, and the other sister durng the war. At first it was confusing but later on you can see that it was the best possible way to reach that impact you build on from envisioning every aspect of this storytelling, past and present.

I feel kind of bad rating this on the lower end because I think it's main crime was just being not really my thing (it was a gift). This book is impressive in it's scope. From the French soldiers going off to war to the aftermath, every moment is so detailed. I would say this book is more about creating a vivid picture of life in WWII France than it is about the plot or characters. (I did feel that the characters, and particularly their relationships to each other, were the weakest part of the book). My guess is that you will like this if you like historical fiction, because it is beautiful, engaging, and well-crafted.

Classic Kristin Hannah trauma porn with a heaping helping of Nazi sympathizing.
