This book was thoroughly researched and easily accessible to readers who don’t read as much history nonfiction. The title was inflammatory, but it will grab readers who might not otherwise read it.

One of my main issues with the book were that while the language was accessible, it did veer into a little more informality than I prefer. The other issue I had is that while, as Nolan points out, psychology does play a part in human behavior, it’s really difficult to posthumously diagnose someone based on paper records from sources who are, themselves, biased.

More devoted history readers might skip this book in favor of something more like Alison Weir’s THE LADY IN THE TOWER, but this would be an excellent place to start for more casual readers.
