A book about an interesting person that just failed to engage me. Many elements felt unfocused and disjointed. I didn't feel like I got either a good understanding of the industry or really about Rod's life in the end beyond a list of Stuff He Did. Thought it was especially strange that infidelity and strains in his marriage were hinted at more than once but not really discussed.

also cw for war violence, I wasn't anticipating that.

Super cool graphic novel about the life of Rod Serling. Makes me want to watch all the Twilight Zone episodes. PS: crazy how everyone smoked back then, it was not just sociable acceptable, but socially expected I think. My mother, (May she Rest In Peace), who died with lung cancer, was a heavy smoker from age 17-60. She quit so she could watch her grandkids (that was my brothers stipulation). That probably gave her the 20 more years. Anyway, she moved from Alabama to NYC after marriage and it was considered juvenile not to smoke, and she was 17! She started so she could assimilate into her new life in the big city.

2023 - 12 Months of Biographies

June

I was today years old when I found out that the Japanese combatants in WWII did suicide attacks on land with land mines strapped to their hands.

It took reading this great biography on Serling to remember why he was important in my early years. Not only was The Twilight Zone one of my dad’s favorites, which I picked up, but Serling and my dad shared similar experiences. My dad fought in WWII, in the Navy. He never talked about it, that I remember. They both were heavy smokers which eventually led to them losing their lives early. They were born the same year (1924) and died the same year (1975), reaching only 50 years. Rod’s first heart attack came the day before my dad’s final one. He (my father) had survived a heart attack during surgery a few weeks earlier but it left his heart weakened. Rod didn’t survive his surgery, dying seven weeks after my dad. To this day I still look up to both of them. Rod will always be one of the greatest, most creative minds ever while my dad will always be the person I strive to be. This book meant a lot to me and I’m grateful to have read it.
