For a book that had an interesting concept (narrated by 45 different items the characters interact with) it just felt a bit flat and meh. You never really developed a relationship with the lead character and we didn’t actually see different perspectives that much despite the range of “narrators”. And the non linear timeline just felt disjointed and unnecessary. It was like this book was trying to do too much at once - I enjoyed the story of the locals but this wasn’t delved into enough and his recovery with some mundane war scenes didn’t seem to gel, I actually think this would have worked better as the authors autobiography.
