i love the format - there aren’t any specific chapters, it goes from quarter to quarter of a school year and whenever there is a change in topic it will be labeled with something that goes along with the topic

Initially read this in high school and at the time it was so compelling... as an adult in my 30s decided to relisten -- it's still a compelling peak inside the mind and perceptions of a teen post trauma
But the prose felt waited down with every day high school angst, kind of slogging through the monotony of every day life. While this is often an accurate experience when someone is trying to survive and re-engage in the world post trauma, it's not the experience I want as a reader/listener

This book should be required reading for all young people. This is one of the great books that shaped me. Now rereading Speak as an adult who works with young people, it was almost like reading it for the first time again. Jason Reynolds afterward also solidified his absolute awesomeness in my eyes.

The way the topic of sexual assault, especially among the high school setting, is handled wonderfully in the book. It addresses just how isolating of an experience it can be and the subsequent mental health decline that comes along with it until you finally come to terms with what happened and reach for help.
