I read this YA book when I was a YA myself, probably around 15 years ago. I think about this book often as it taught me a lot. Reading it again in my 30’s, I’ve learned even more.

This book teaches us the importance of harboring safe spaces for women, children, daughters, friends, students—you don’t know what anyone is going through and sometimes when they need the most help, they get ignored by those that thought were friends and family because they act a little bit different. Reach out and have patience for loved ones, and for strangers too.

As adults, it is our duty to teach young women how to say no and to understand what sexual assault is and to help them not feel shame. A victim of sexual assault should never have to question whether they were the problem. It is also our duty to teach men how to understand “no” and how to keep their hands to themselves. Leading by example is a good start.

This book also highlights the need to get ahead of the alcohol issue that many struggle with. Alcohol is not an excuse for bad behavior, but it can lead to regrettable decisions that may have been avoided with the proper age and limited consumption of alcohol. But to be clear, alcohol is not the only problem here, it is an assaulter that fully believes he is in the right to assault. And that is not ok.

No means no. Too drunk to answer means no. No answer means no. I’ll say it again—NO MEANS NO.

This book also explores politics and basic human decency. Mr Neck tells his students that immigrants have stolen jobs and blamed them for his son’s inability to get a job. When David Petrakis stands up, he is yelled at. But he then displays the power of youth and freedom of speech and puts Mr. Neck in his place. Beautiful example of how powerful the voice of the youth can be.

I only took away .5 star rating for some outdated language. But ultimately a 5 star overall.

i love the format - there aren’t any specific chapters, it goes from quarter to quarter of a school year and whenever there is a change in topic it will be labeled with something that goes along with the topic

I first read this book in high school and it helped me through so much. I got the chance to re-read it for an elective class I’m taking in college focusing on YA novels and it def hit harder in a different way this time. It’s such an important for anyone going through depression, trauma or for anyone trying to understand someone who might be shutting down due to these things 🤍

Initially read this in high school and at the time it was so compelling... as an adult in my 30s decided to relisten -- it's still a compelling peak inside the mind and perceptions of a teen post trauma
But the prose felt waited down with every day high school angst, kind of slogging through the monotony of every day life. While this is often an accurate experience when someone is trying to survive and re-engage in the world post trauma, it's not the experience I want as a reader/listener
