It started out strong, but I quickly lost interest in the plot.  This is not a horror book, which is what I picked it up for.  The plot is super slow and repetitive; the same nothing is happening over and over for most of the book.  Only the main character is fully fleshed out - the rest of the characters are just cardboard standees.  Since I was only invested in the main character, there was nothing to tie me to the plot as he slowly lost his mind and became a complete asshat.  I was interested in this story overall, but, for a two hundred and seventy-seven page book, it certainly dragged.

“The Between” was a quick read packed with intrigue, mystery, and suspense. The last 20 or so pages, my heart was beating so fast... I love when a book can do that!

Tananarive Due creates characters that you feel for with just a few sentences. I love the way she anthropomorphized the ocean towards the beginning of the book. She’s definitely a skilled writer! I can’t wait to read more by her!

This book is absolutely devastating. I am emotionally wrecked. The Between is truly haunting, but finds beauty within the cracks and scars left behind from trauma, death, grief and everything in between.

Due’s masterful writing ripped my fucking heart out, so I’m happy to say I will be reading everything she has ever written.
