Cute little vignettes of life in a poor, majority Hispanic neighborhood. An simple but really poetic read!

This short yet powerful collection of vibrant vignettes deeply moved me. The characters are relatable and fascinating. The setting, the Latino section of Chicago, captures a lively community. But most of all, the main character, Esperanza Cordero, is one of the most lovable and down-to-earth characters I’ve ever read.

Esperanza’s coming-of-age story tugged on my heart strings all the way through. She is so endearing, and as I was reading it, I wanted to protect this big-hearted character at all costs. From the precise poetry to the harsh heartbreak, I loved everything about this masterpiece. Watching Esperanza grow and invent herself is very inspiring.

Sandra Cisneros’ writing is eloquent and unforgettable. Cisneros does a superb job of connecting all the lives of this inner-city neighborhood through the eyes of a young girl. She is a talented writer with a poignant writing style. I admire it.

I recommend it to everyone! Everyone can benefit from seeing the world through Esperanza for little while.

So good. Deceptively simple. I read the 25th anniversary edition, and the author's introduction was nearly as wonderful as the book.

I don’t think this was my cup of tea. I thought the beginning introduction was unnecessary and felt out of place. Also, i’m not sure if I missed it, but it didn’t match with the audiobook? Some of the poems were interesting but other than that nothing really stood out to me. Maybe again I also missed it but I wasn’t sure what time period we were in. Nothing grasped my attention and kept me engaged. I also didn’t like the use of the word wetback. Overall eh
