I believe that this is one of the cases where "if you get it then you get it, if you don't you don't". I got it. This book was fantastic, absolutely outstanding in a very quiet and depressing kind of way. There were several points, where I had to put the book down, collect myself, and just thought "this is the best book I've read in months" (if not longer).

I can't speak for those people that "don't get it", but my experience with this book was devastating. It's a slow paced story, mostly on the brink of disaster, but in the quietest way possible. Jared is being squeezed between so many different people and neither he nor the reader knows whom to trust. As the reader, you get the feeling that he could open up a little more and receive some help, but you also understand that he's been through so much shit (and is actively going through more of it) that such an "ask" is incredibly daunting - not to mention dangerous.

Loved the ghostly presences. Loved all the new characters, was really proud of Jared for pushing on and pushing through. Was devastated and heartbroken and hopeful and depressed. All of these feelings all at once. In fact, the vibes were such that Trickster Drift had the same effect on me as reading Chainsaw Man even though the elements that created the atmosphere were really different (also, in comparison to CSM, Trickster Drift does not have a weird obsession with boobs and sex).

Basically, what I'm saying is: read this series. The synopsis from the first book is perhaps more applicable to this second book (aka if you're disappointed by the lack of magical things in the first book just continue to the second one) but it's good in it's own ways. The second book is better, so much better. Can't recommend it highly enough. (If you get it)

I'm putting this down as a tentative favorite but I'll decide whether that is an accurate assessment once I re-read it.

This book is so many things, all of them wonderful. It's part First Nations fantasy, part coming of age, partly about struggling with inner demons (and in this case also outer demons!) and part struggles with family. I was immediately drawn back into Jared's world and his daily struggles. You just really feel for him and want him to have some good things in his life for once. As he starts to get them, other parts of his life unravel faster and faster and my heart breaks for him. I love that Robinson made this into a series and I'm so excited to read the next book and really, everything she's ever written. Her prose is so touching and beautiful. There are times when I want to capture a sentence and hold on to it and admire the beauty of her words like snuggling under a warm blanket in winter.

This one is for sure better than the first! She gets more into the lore and magic, which I have been lovinggggg. I am so excited to read the 3rd after everything that happened in this one. The mark of a good series is when you got out to buy the next book immediately, and that is exactly what I did. Eden Robinson is a talent

The second installment in the Trickster trilogy and it is great! I loved the introduction of new family members and more magical beings. Robinson's ability to bring light and love to such dark themes is masterful. Well worth the read.

I got a bit wowed by the ending and found it slightly abrupt. Maybe I just didn’t want it to end. Connected with many characters.

I found that it was extremely hard to follow. At the end I was lost trying to figure out what happened in the last 1/3 of the book. I think it has potential but I would have to re-read it for sure.
