I think I spent a good portion of the book not understanding it. Not sure where all the narrative parts were going and how things went together. However soon the interstitials tied together, and helped shift my perspective.

There's so much trauma to deal with, but there's also a bit of joy. Being lost, and wondering if the correct decisions were made. Possibly being mad at fate.

I couldn't really get into the structure of the book. It was an interesting story, but it kept me at a distance and it didn't really come together. For me it wasn't able to really draw a picture, because it stayed too much on the surface of everything. But it isn't a bad book by any means, I just needed a bit more.

Achingly beautiful and sad, this book makes the journey of this Vietnamese family so very exceedingly real. I was impressed by how deeply the author explored their journey through many decades and at such a variety of points. It fully detailed each phase of their experience. The prose was beautiful and made the physical spaces and emotional states come alive for me. I was not expecting such a contemporary finish … and at the end, this proved to be very grounding to have the ending right in the present. So moving. Thank you, Cecile Pin.
