A tough story to read filled with grief, yet ends in a very hopeful tone.  The story focuses on an immigrant families experience in immigrating from Vietnam to the UK.  It shows the heartache and the triumphs.  The ending chapter was absolutely wonderful.  I loved the look at intergenerational trauma and the healing the family experienced. The sentiments how why stories are important made me cry.

The journey Anh and her brothers go on is such a devastating and beautiful rollercoaster. Being an American, it was very interesting to read about a fictionalized version of how refugees were treated in another English speaking country. Fuck Thatcher. (Though, the UK cover is what turned me on to this book in the first place.) The twist at the end was well done. What a treasure.

I think I spent a good portion of the book not understanding it. Not sure where all the narrative parts were going and how things went together. However soon the interstitials tied together, and helped shift my perspective.

There's so much trauma to deal with, but there's also a bit of joy. Being lost, and wondering if the correct decisions were made. Possibly being mad at fate.
