Just finished, I'll have more to say about this later but oh my Sweet Mercy I loved every minute of this! Nona has got to be one of my favorite characters EVER.

I initially got this book for its stunning cover. What's inside is far better, more interesting, more riveting than this amazing cover art. I haven't read much Mark Lawrence before now, but I will track down everything this guy has written, after I have devoured the rest of the Book of the Ancestor series. I am ready to follow Nona into any battle.

I think I would have enjoyed this even more if I had read vs audiobook. (Although the audiobook was good [minus a couple glitches]—I just get distracted and sometimes find myself a bit lost in the plot.)

This just felt kinda meh. I liked the writing but the characters didn’t feel deep or real enough for me and I am not in the mood for “badass assassin Harry Potter with nuns”…

I was really torn between 4 and 5 stars for this. The book is amazing. The characters are super interesting, the plot twists and turns in very satisfying ways, the universe that we’ve seen so far seems rich and like there is more to discover. I went with 4 stars because I had one big problem with it the whole time. These girls are like 10 and 11. There’s no way, even those gifted, that 11 year olds are going to be able to think as clearly and rationally, and pull off all of the things they do. And that bothered me. But otherwise I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read the next one!
