*mentally prepares self to be cancelled*

Did we all read the same book? It takes reading literally 70% of the book before anything interesting happens at all, and once it gets going it’s fully underwhelming. It’s soooooo long and for what purpose? Wikipedia managed to summarize the entirety of the major plot points in 7 paragraphs and, frankly, that’s more than enough. Just because something was written nearly 100 years ago with arguably beautiful prose does not make it inherently good or a classic. The writing is excellent and for that you get 2 stars, but let’s not glorify a novel that lacked proper editing and meandering plot for 300+ pages. Also, what is the purpose of never naming the main character? Let the woman have a name! Okay, rant over. Sorry not sorry

"You see," she said, snapping the top, and walking down the stairs, "you are so very different from Rebecca."

Loved this a lot! I just loved the atmosphere of the whole thing, particularly the first half - Rebecca being the antagonist of the story that she doesn't even appear in, it's just genius! All the descriptions from our main lady (who doesn't get named, leaning into that sense of unimportance amidst the mere memory of Rebecca, she goes nameless because Rebecca is too powerful, I love that so much) are very cinematic - I can certainly see how this story would lend itself to film and I am beyond excited to experience the eeriness and psychological trauma in a visual sense. The reason this isn't a 5 star is because the 'twist' itself ie. the actual thrilling bit of the thriller did not really blow me away - it's not something super creative but I still like how previous expectations were subverted. I'm just really really excited to watch the Hitchcock version of this because I have a feeling it's going to be insane. But yeah, this whole thing was enjoyable and actually very engaging, couldn't put it down at some parts.

It was such a thrilling story. I went into this thinking that it was going to be like a ghost story mixed with a sad romance. I was right on the sad romance part but really missed the point in the ghost part. It was psychological thriller and there were many unexpected things happening .
Spoiler When Maxim said "the look on her face while she was dying" I was like "How did you see that dude she died alone at sea. Then the twist, the twist hit so hard, it was better than many murder mystery novels. I'm still shook that Maxim actually killed Rebecca. Also I kept thinking that Rebecca was pregnant so the last twist was also unexpected to me.
It was a very complex story and after the first ten pages I was hooked. I might read this again in the future since it was that good.
