Definitely one of the creepiest and most fascinating novels I have read in a while. I loved so many things about it: how it progressed, the (debatable)"antagonist", the finale, even the ending itself. I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes the genre.

I originally gave this 4.25 stars, but then found myself thinking about this book and talking about it more than many other books I read this year. It's not stunning literature that will change the world, but the insidious way it burrows into your brain and makes you uncomfortable and on edge is something I have not experienced in a long time. Honestly in such a subtle way the horror of this book snuck up on me. It shocked me the way predictable horror troupes have fallen short of for years now. I appreciate the feeling of being a new, imaginative reader again. That's worth 5 stars and more.

I really struggled to get into this book. I made it about half way through then came back to it almost a year later. As someone that doesn't like sports, I really hated how much basketball scenes there were especially in the first half. In second half, I spead through it and finished it in one sitting. The reflection of general trauma and mistakes impacts every culture differently. I enjoyed the second half of this dark mysterious thriller. I now understand why it was recommended to me.

This book was so unique and creepy. I love Native American folktales. They’re some of the spookiest one’s we have and not enough are told authentically or ethically. At times, this book was a challenge. Mostly due to the style of writing (a lot of stream of conscious) which became confusing multiple times.  Also there were a few scenes that started getting really annoying because of how much detail (pages worth) of basketball games in a driveway. On some level, this was important, but I think it would have been improved if those moments were cut down to once or twice. Not every 2 chapters.

However, the ending saved the 3 star rating. The ending was very satisfying.

It passes the “stay on the shelf” test. But, I probably won’t be re-reading it for several years. This definitely has gore and very cruel animal abuse for those sensitive to those topics. I had a lot of thoughts throughout this story, both disgust and shock. But in a way this book clearly set out to be with a purpose in mind.

there were parts of this book and certain writing choices that i didn’t love (for instance, the monster gets pov chapters… and those chapters are not scary…), but overall this is a GREAT story that had me scared often and very invested. i have never anxiously page-turned the way i  did during the climax. my eyes were FLYING over those pages lol.
