Really enjoyed the science-fiction and time travel aspects of this. Did not enjoy the romance between the protagonist and one of the dudes she works with. It was unnecessary and felt like a weird excuse to write a fetish sex scene about someone with an amputated limb. Also the fact that there is some pretty significant things that are discovered in the course of that relationship that are never explained or linked back to the plot despite that being the only reason they were mentioned in depth. Weird.

However overall a very engaging and well-written novel. I can see this becoming a series or a movie. Hopefully it does.

It was really good, but way too dense. It needed to be 30 or so pages shorter. It would have improved the pacing.

I absolutely loved this book. It pushed all the right buttons for me: quantum many worlds, time travel paradoxes, eschatology, Viking myth… The comparisons to True Detective and 12 Monkeys are apt but I was also reminded of the movie Event Horizon (although this is much much better) and William Gibson’s most recent novel The Peripheral. Gibson’s “stubs” and the possible futures presented here are similar, as is the exploration of what their not-quite-real status means for their inhabitants.

The protagonist, NCIS agent Shannon Moss, is really well drawn. The details of her background, her reasons for going into law enforcement, and her relationships with other characters are compelling. Also she’s convincingly tough without being a one-dimensional “badass”.
