Man, this book is fucking gross. So disturbing sometimes. I grimaced through whole scenes, several times. However, I really enjoyed the writing and I burned through it in two sittings. I always advocate for more diverse characters and strong female characters, but given that this is about Boy Scouts and inspired by Lord of the Flies, the homogeneity isn't surprising. I give it a pass. Really taut storytelling, a horrifying threat, some heartbreaking scenes, and all the skin-crawling disgust you could ask for.

Personally, not for me. I found the horror to be more sad than scary, and I felt pretty frustrated by the end of it. Give it a try, it's definitely last paced, but I dunno I don't think I'll be picking up another from this author anytime soon .

masterful atmosphere and visceral descriptions but hampered by weak characterization. relies too heavily on the gross-factor

this book was such a harrowing read. after reading i just felt gross, which i think is what the author had it mind. it reminds me very much of lord of the flies, minus the cannibalism. overly, this book was amazing. the detail, the characters, everything was written with so much purpose and detail that it was hard to put down.

Well that was certainly a trip. Fairly decent read, not my typical kind of horror, but not bad as a refresher between other subgenres. It's a pretty solid three for me personally, and I could see this potentially being pretty polarizing for people.

Absolutely disgusting in every way imaginable. It’s expertly told, weaving together interviews, scientific recordings, and first hand accounts of the horror of the mutated hydatid. I’m so glad I didn’t have to add “cannibalism” the the trigger warnings on this thing, and that’s all I can say about it, really.

Edit: after reading other reviews, yes, the boys fit a certain stereotype and yes, there’s nothing “new” brought to horror in this book. HOWEVER, if you enjoy gore and seeing how grossed out you can get, this is the book for you. It’s just another “science has gone too far” book, but it’s the expertly crafted existential horror and the mystery of who will and won’t survive that make it a good read.
