I went into this with high hopes, only to get a quarter of the way through and wonder why I was bothering. This book isn’t scary, it’s just…gross. Probably just a personal preference, but I’m looking for a horror book with dread and terror, not just body horror and animal mutilation.

The worms as a concept could have been interesting, but they’re either a threat, or they aren’t.
Shelly ends up letting hundreds of them loose into the ocean at one point and we’re supposed to believe a chemical dump caught EVERY worm or fish that ate them?

The cast is a dull mismatch of stereotypes. Meat headed mean jock, ill tempered delinquent, the follower, the cruel “psycho”, and the fat kid (which the author will remind you, REPEATEDLY of. You will not forget that Newton is fat). All I got from this book is apparently young boys are two steps away from losing their minds and turning to cruelty? Very lord of the flies I guess.

Shelley was absolutely not needed. This felt like a tacked on extra threat because the worms themselves weren’t “scary” enough, so there needed to be some unhinged…mastermind, apparently? He was a very methodical psycho for being what, 14? Managing to play every adult and other kid like a fiddle. There’s multiple instances of animal mutilation, but the
graphic six(ish) page interlude of Shelley’s recollection of killing a kitten and getting aroused over it wasn’t needed.
At all.

And, if you’re curious, there’s over 20 mentions of “piss” or bladders or peeing in this book. Not sure why the author felt we needed that, but it was frequent enough that it was kinda distracting lol.

If you are into horror I highly recommend this one. Atmosphere and story were there for me even listening to the audiobook, gave me chills a few times lol. Def go through the trigger warnings though as needed, the descriptions were detailed. Alternating POVs were really good here too.

Well that was certainly a trip. Fairly decent read, not my typical kind of horror, but not bad as a refresher between other subgenres. It's a pretty solid three for me personally, and I could see this potentially being pretty polarizing for people.

This was an enjoyable novel. The authors created a scarily believable premise.
A bioengineered tape worm that is supposed to help with weight loss but turns extremely dangerous and eats the host from the inside out.
The scout troop gets trapped on the island after it’s quarantined, each falling into a darkness of their own. With no help or word from the outside world the boys must do their best with the things they have to survive the weekend. A well written body horror with a little mix of technothriller, this gross out fiction isn’t for those with a weak stomach.

This was a very… interesting read. If you like horror, gore, animal torture, and kids trying to survive a deadly virus… this is the book for you!

MAJOR SPOILERS:
Fuck Shelley. It pains me to know that no one knows what happened to Kent. Poor Newt. Eef?! How horrible what happened to him.. and Max has to live with all of this (or does he?)

It was kind of a drag to get through this book, which is unfortunate bc this had a lot of horror tropes I personally enjoy. However, I found the ending to be pretty well done and probably the only reason I didn’t give this book a lower score.
My opinion of this book really went downhill once it was revealed that Shelley was a huge creep via details I wish I didn’t have to read.

Rare that a book can introduce 7 characters to me right off the bat and I can keep track of all of them. They each had such a unique perspective, informed by such different experiences and dynamics, that it was easy to tell them apart. This book was also just plain good. Horrifying. And good. Trigger warnings abounds.
