The cover is very pretty.
The book itself is ... existing.

I actually was very excited for this book and couldn't wait to read it! A gay Hades x Persephone retelling? Count me in! The first book was okay but I enjoyed it enough to continue the series but after this train wreck

um, this kind of writing where everything is way too much, every emotion is just so overpowered, every interaction is very intense, every dialogue is meaningless and repetitive. It just doesn’t work for me

Maybe I’m basic, but this universe is a good time. It’s dramatic and exciting – maybe over-dramatic at times but it gives gay man writing gay fantasy in the best way and honestly I’m here for those vibes. Who needs reality?
There’s a couple plot holes and errors (
could he not just wear gloves all the time? I need someone to explain this to me lol
but the writing flow on a sentence level is good and I think both this book’s plot and the overall story of the world is engaging. It probably leans more into being a dark fantasy rather than a traditional romance plot (don’t get me wrong, the romance is 🔥), which I think works well if you know what you’re getting into! Can’t wait to continue on in Darkmourne!

This was fun, achillian, Hades & Persephone story with a vampire/elven twist. Entertaining but I think I would have struggled if I'd read the physical book instead of listening to the audiobook. The characters were interesting but felt inconsistent at times.

There are some twists and turns and some cool world-building but I wish I'd stopped before I read the last chapter :P.

I knocked the star rating down for some miscommunication/non-communication trope as its my least favourite thing and leaning a bit into insta-love as it feels like the main characters move far too quickly from enemies to love especially given the origins of their relationship (kidnapping).

Also, a huge pet peeve for me is unrealistic sex scenes. If you're going to put them in, think them through! For example, the author introduces the idea that the characters have access to lube at the beginning then the two MMCs just go wild with intense sex using only spit. Why????

5/10 would recommend
