Not as good as Duffy, but still GOOD.
Also, Gerard Doyle is a bloody gift to humanity, so he is!

A bit too brutal for me. But the protagonist had such a great 'voice'. Witty...in a gruff way.

I tried again to read this, and couldn't do it. First of all, the depiction of Manhattan, and especially Harlem, do not ring true whatsoever and contribute negatively to discussions about people of color in urban areas in the US. (I grew up in that area and was a teenager exploring Manhattan during the era in which the novel is set- so I know what it was really like.)

And yet again, McKinty's misogyny is a thread that runs through every page of the book. I got about halfway through but couldn't make it further.

McKinty's writing is fine, but his worldview is retro. If only his great imagination could be used to imagine a world where people of color and women were human beings!

3.5/5 stars. I really liked the parts where he got down to brass tacks and told the story. I did not like the parts where he rambled on and on and on and... You get the picture. He could easily have reduced the book by 100 pages without losing anything of importance.

Good story, and very possibly my favorite narrator to date.
