I've always loved WWII-era fiction, and this book is no exception. It's beautifully-written and haunting. I found myself highlighting many different passages throughout! It's a unique plot that follows the lives of two characters from that time - a French girl and a German boy - who seem very real. Their lives don't truly intersect until the end, and it's not a love story. It's a story of survival and learning how to do the right thing.

A title that I must write
It was a fun novel with engaging characters and a taut story. I didn’t really connect with it in the way that quite a few people have.

Given this book is as highly rated as is it, I was shocked I didn't like it. Maybe I expected too much since so many people like it. It is not my favourite style of writing. Short and choppy sentences that feel like unfinished thoughts. The end of the book happened long before the last page. The last of it felt forced, like trying to give the rest of the story purpose, when it all could have ended before the post war story lines. I dislike books that include unnecessary sexual assault, and unfortunately there is that within this book. It doesn't add to the story, it didn't add to character development nor was it needed for the rest of the story. It was like the author acknowledging they forgot about a character that was now needed for the end, so they might as well give them something more terrible than being mistreated, force labored and near starved.
