I liked this book much more than I thought I would, but the pacing was inconsistent, the writing felt fan fiction-y at times, and I wish that it hadn’t felt so locked up in Eve’s head. The dialogue was also generally stilted. I thought the questions it brought up were interesting, however.

I - wow. This book is a book everyone should read once, and maybe once again when they are experiencing any type of grief from loss of a loved one. Onyi Nwabineli somehow put indescribable feelings into the words that could closest describe them and that in and of itself is a gift to the world, and I truly believe it will be a comfort to those in similar situations.

Sometimes I really shoot myself in the foot by not reading or remembering book blurbs.

This book is about a woman who just lost her husband to suicide, and having recently lost a friend to suicide, it wasn’t the right choice.  Proceed with caution if you’ve lost a loved one or have any difficulty with mentions of suicide.

The grief in this book is overwhelming.  It’s like you’re swimming in the ocean and all of a sudden you’re being pummeled by wave after wave with no relief or break to come up for air.  It feels like drowning.

There wasn’t much else in this book except the processing of her grief and I just wasn’t ready.

I shed a tear during every single chapter of this book, softly weeping at my desk while Adoja Andoh narrated probably the saddest book and ever read and with her soothing voice, and a friend basically holding my hand during our buddy read did I make it out alive. Onyi Nwabineli is a powerhouse author and I don’t know if I have read her equal. The rawness which Eve walks through her grief, has fundamentally changed the way in which I will hold space for people grieving in my own life.
