I enjoyed this book more than the first installment. I felt it was more suspenseful and the direction of the plot was clearer. Multiple POVs provided more story content and allowed secondary characters to develop their own dramatic and romantic subplot without interfering with what was happening in the main plotline. That secondary plotline also spiced things up when the action in the main plot lulled and provided space for a bit of humor in an otherwise dark and serious situation. Personally, I found the romance arc in this story WAY more interesting than in One Dark Window. Instead of trying to be stoic all the time, the couple poke at each other verbally and emotionally, which becomes a more realistic connection and a much more entertaining read.

Content warning: violence, gore, domestic violence, sexual assault, altered/drugged memory loss

I thought this did a good job of expanding the world and lore of ODW, and also gave a satisfying ending. The twists and turns especially near the end had me gasping. I did find the short chapters/POV changes to be a bit jarring and wishing we had more time with some characters (namely Elm). This is a series that I think I'll want to revisit, especially in December when it's near winter solstice.

I started reading the physical book, but switched to audio when my hold came in from the library because of convenience reasons lol. While I thought the audiobook was good, I personally prefer reading this series.

Loved this duology — the POV switches slowed me down through the middle but overall I love the variety of messages.. the multiple stakes kept things interesting throughout this series. Elm and Ione were 😩🩵 I like how their story eased up the hard hitting plot and created much needed space within the story. By the end I didn’t mind that Elspeth was gone, she needed her find her own truth anyways. The final scenes were written so well, the resolution was very satisfying especially for Elspeth and Nightmare 🥲 Cannot believe this is Rachel Gillig’s debut series!!

3.75

i give this book a 3.75 because it was really good but i do not think it was as good as the previous book.

i was hoping to find out even more about
the shepherd king. i feel like we did learn a lot, but i was disappointed in what this centuries long rivalry boiled down to. essentially, the rowan’s had a 500 year long reign of terror because of a casualty in the form of the shepherd kings sister. i do agree that this is a travesty, but was expecting something a bit more chaotic and grim considering other events and elements in this duology.

i will say that i absolutely loved being able to learn more about other characters from the shifting POV. i missed having Elspeths internal monologues and dialogues with the nightmare, but having Elms POV easily makes up for this. Elm quickly became my favorite character in this duology, and i wish there was more to be looking forward to.

i absolutely recommend this book; i enjoyed this a lot and will be looking for next works by the author.
