While I loved the first book, I feel like this flubbed it's landing so it is not a full five stars.
The parallels between the Shepard King's family and Ravyn's was a little vague. And while I can appreciate Taxus hating Ravyn, it felt over done and under-explained (why do you hate him? What emotions does it bring up? Give us more than just "He's an idiot" all the time. I did love the Shepard King's relationship with Elspeth. Elm's and Ione's relationship carried this book. I loved every scene with them, and the twist with the Maiden card, what was done to Ione, and how she survived was horrifyingly beautiful.
As a whole, not as fully bodied as the first, but still hauntingly well-written nonetheless.

I thought this did a good job of expanding the world and lore of ODW, and also gave a satisfying ending. The twists and turns especially near the end had me gasping. I did find the short chapters/POV changes to be a bit jarring and wishing we had more time with some characters (namely Elm). This is a series that I think I'll want to revisit, especially in December when it's near winter solstice.

I started reading the physical book, but switched to audio when my hold came in from the library because of convenience reasons lol. While I thought the audiobook was good, I personally prefer reading this series.

Loved this duology — the POV switches slowed me down through the middle but overall I love the variety of messages.. the multiple stakes kept things interesting throughout this series. Elm and Ione were 😩🩵 I like how their story eased up the hard hitting plot and created much needed space within the story. By the end I didn’t mind that Elspeth was gone, she needed her find her own truth anyways. The final scenes were written so well, the resolution was very satisfying especially for Elspeth and Nightmare 🥲 Cannot believe this is Rachel Gillig’s debut series!!
