Another in the Bridgerton series number 7 to be exact concentrating on Hyacinth and her love interest Gareth who is Lady Danbury's grandson. Some interesting witty comebacks. Exploring Isabella, his mother, who he inherits her Italian diary, which Hyacinth translates. A regency set chick lit and a good romp.

At this point in the Bridgerton series, i’m starting to think that despite all the surrounding drama, the stories are the exact same.
Virginal girl meets reformed rake with some small temper issues, he does something foolish right when she realizes she could love him, they kiss and make up. rinse and repeat ad nauseam.
Hyacinth is clever and charming, Gareth is suave and sometimes condescending, and Lady Danbury as always stole the show. Julia Quinn does this thing with her men where they are just deplorable for no reason?? Why on earth does Gareth think he has to compromise her to keep her in the marriage instead of communicating like they’ve done the rest of the book? we may never know lmao

This book had a bit of a mystery/treasure hunt plot to it, which was fun! I enjoyed all the sneaking around and scheming. I think hyacinth has a really funny personality and she has great banter with Gareth. I loved the friendship between lady Danbury and hyacinth as well! This wasn’t my favorite in the series though, I liked some of the other books a bit more. I noticed the author reused the exact plot line from Simon in book 1 where Daphne points outhe is living his life to spite his father, and not making choices that are really about himself. Could she not think of anything else? I liked gareth but I think I liked Michael in Francesca’s story more. It seemed like Gareth was meant to be another handsome, witty rake. It’s the same story recycled again. Something different that happened was that hyacinth chose to have sex before marriage, knowing what that would mean for her reputation. Other than that there’s not a whole lot of spice in this one! Whenever hyacinth’s season gets made on Netflix I hope they leave out the bit about Gareth being forcibly engaged to who sounds like a mentally disabled woman bc she has a large dowry. I could do without the ableism for “plot.” I probably won’t reread and will opt to watch the Netflix show instead, but I might reread in a few years whenever hyacinth’s season comes!

The mystery aspects of this one were fun. The characters' personalities are still mostly copy paste from all her other main characters, but this story was at least a bit more intriguing.
The fact that Hyacinth enjoys reading entertaining but poorly written books (with Lady Danbury) was extremely ironic, as that's exactly what I'm doing. Quinn's writing is not as bad as the author within her own book, but I still see so much more potential for her novels to be so much better. All the framework is there, it's just never explored fully.
I do think, also, that Hyacinth might be on the spectrum. She is a perfectionist with a strong sense of justice, social bluntness and more. If we ever get her season on the Bridgerton series, I hope they explore that rather than take her character in a different direction.
Julia seems to make all her heroes state somewhere along the way that the heroine is "Not like the other girls". I don't think I noticed until this one that she does this every time without fail. I do think Hyacinth was at least more unique than usual (but still mostly copy paste personality wise save a few threads that weren't pulled on hardly enough). But it's an annoying trope to compare women like that.
