2.75/5: incredible worldbuilding and complex characters but lacking the craft to bring it all together

Sigh. I really wanted to like this, but ugh. So much no. Should have listened to my gut and dnfed it early, but I liked the worldbuilding and wanted to see where it was going. I ended up skimming  the last 20% because it was due back at the library, and I didn't want to use another hold slot on it, but wanted to see if it got better. No folks, it got worse. So many eyerolls, much gratuitous violence that felt pointless... It felt like a first draft that needs a lot of editing. There was a lot of repetitive explanations and meandering exposition, and entire povs that didn't seem to have a point. Editing is important! I wish that more time had been spent refining it, because it could be a really good story. I'll try other books by this author but probably won't continue this series.

In Bassa, a reverse caste system–where lighter skin is looked down upon to the point of segregation–is upheld. Danso is ‘mixed’ and therefore basically shunned, despite his academic excellence as a university scholar. After the appearance of a fabled “Yellowskin” (Lilong), his curiosity sets him and his betrothed (Esheme) on different life-changing paths, and Danso discovers that his otherness may be a gift. The story sucked me in immediately, lulled in the middle, and then somewhat dragged at the end due to Esheme’s role as a one-dimensional villain.

The worldbuilding is incredible....which means the first third of the book is an absolute slog. It really picks up in interesting ways if you can make it through that.

Classic fantasy! Magic, a long journey, social inequality, epic battle scenes, loveable but young heroes!

The world building was so artfully done, I felt like I was in the forests and savanas with them without being held down by lengthy descriptions

loved this book and can't wait for the next one!!
