The Beyond the Maps story clinched this whole book for me. Such a beautiful, heart wrenching story of loss and revenge and revelation and repentance and redemption.

I loved these new stories especially the one about the creaturepedia author. The last one was hard. It was really sad and almost boring at some parts. Definitely a little confusing but the end was worth it.
I knew from the beginning who his daughter was and that reveal made it so much better.

Okay, so most of the stories here were solidly in the "not as good as the main saga, but enjoyable enough I'll read them". That last (and longest) one though...

Look, objectively I understand that it was a beautiful redemption story. But also, that was the slowest and most depressing middle grade fantasy I've ever read. Like Chesterton pointed out about children and dragons, I don't need to be told that the world is hard and people make terrible decisions that make it even harder for themselves and everyone around them. And a large part of the reason I read middle grade and YA fantasy is because they are always pointing out the world can be better, while grown up books just want to wallow in the misery. For my taste, that story wallowed for a long time before it got around to the redemptive ending.

“They took her! What good is a weapon in your hand now unless you mean to turn it against yourself?”

That was probably one of the most brutal lines I’ve ever read from a middle grade book… and I loved it!!!! Some parts where confusing, if you know you know. I really wanna find someone to talk to about this book!

From adventures to a ballad, from a love story, to a deep meaningful novella, The Wingfeather Tales is an amazing and beautiful book. Most stories have something to do with characters introduced in the Saga, and all are stupendous reads.
