This was basically just a good fun story about wishing, but being careful what you wish for.

I loved this book and the TV show when I was wee and it was just as good as I remembered.

I first read this book in my school library many, many years ago when I was about 9 or 10. I loved it then - I’m sure I borrowed it more than once. As an adult I sourced a copy some years ago but never got around to rereading it until now. I’m so glad I did! This story is still fabulous and I enjoyed it very much. Dick King-Smith is a brilliant storyteller.

I saw the television adaption as a child but didn't read the book itself until I was an adult, as a result of being unable to sleep and having nothing else to hand! I'm glad I did read it though because it's far superior to the TV show based on it.

The story does have quite a strong moral tone - 'be careful what you wish for' - but it's not heavy handed, more uplifting.
