A book about unspoken conflicts between lovers and friends that tries to be a romance but doesn't really pull it off. Dominic is exactly the type of character that sometimes infuriates a reader with their naivety and childishness. He doesn't see what has happened nor what is going to happen.

Structurally the book works somewhat well but in the end all of the characters are a bit of a one note characters and for me the ultimate relationship Dominic is left with is IMO completely dysfunctional. Not quite Harlequin level of a romance but not a dramatic masterpiece either.Ā

If you frequent AITA threads on Reddit but also reread The Great Gatsby yearly, you'll want to read The Gay Best Friend.

Domenic's life implodes when his fiancƩ calls off their wedding. Theres no time though to process his own trauma because his best friends' wedding is still very much happening. At least he hopes so.

For the lifetime of their friendships, Domenic has been two versions of himself - one for each best friend. When the bachelor and bachelorette parties happen, each friend makes demands of him regarding loyalty. Domenic will have to either choose a side or compartmentalize or crumble under the pressure of being the perfect ideal of the gay best friend.

As he navigates the seven-layer dip of drama served up by the wedding party, Domenic has his self awareness challenged. What boundaries does he need to have healthy relationships? When does his needs come first? Can he value himself without comparison to his best friends' charmed life?

You're going to want to make The Gay Best Friend a buddy read or have a friend lined up to read it as soon as you're done. I wanted to throw my copy at my best friend, but instead I texted her a link to preorder followed by a eating popcorn gif. This read is juicy, messy, and wholesome if you can even imagine it.

Fun and funny, this one is a trip.

Dom is the gay best friend to Patrick and his fiancĆ©e, Kate. Heā€™s the best man at their wedding. Except when he has to play both sides and attend the bachelor and bachelorette parties while keeping secrets of what happened among the guys while the girls just want the scoop. And then thereā€™s groomsman and professional golfer, Bucky Graham. Hypermasculine yet kind of a flirt?

I loved how Dom needed to navigate both his friendships and yet felt sad he couldnā€™t truly be himself with either one. His journey toward deciding to put himself first took a while in coming, and that made him frustrating at times, but always likable.

I want to rip my hair OUT!! This is why I have to stop reading books about wedding parties. While I could see our protagonistā€™s faults and flaws, I couldnā€™t freaking handle the other people in this book!

Dom is the best friend to both the bride and groom, and he is CONSTANTLY stuck in the middle of their battles. He is supposed to support both of them, supposed to keep secrets like a good friend, confess all the dirt on the otherā€¦ like a good friend. He is blamed for the faults in this relationship and I wanted to SCREAM!

Aside from that, Dom has a strange connection with someone who basically uses him and then pushes him away, making excuses and not factoring in Domā€™s feelings at all.

I wanted to enjoy this one, and for the most part, I didā€¦ but the things that I couldnā€™t get past I REALLY could not get past. By the end, I no longer cared enough about any of the relationships because none of them seemed healthy.

I enjoyed the narration for the most part, but the voicing for the Bucky character was AWFUL! Took me out of the story a little because I hated the voice attached to a character I was supposed to really like.

I finished it.Ā
Ā I am not sure why or the reason but I just didnā€™t like the story and the characters I didnā€™t connect with. It could have been the narrator but honestly, the plot was a good over all idea.Ā
