I already did not really like the first two books, because of the multiple problems with them - going from racism to queerphobia, the downplay of physical, mental and most importantly sexual abuse, the whole „man is greater than woman“ stuff which wasn’t exactly hidden and most importantly the blatant fascism, especially when it comes to government systems.
In this book, he definitely lost me after an actual discussion described in the book about how the biggest threat to the group is democracy? Hell no.

I’m really glad I did not buy physical copies of the trilogy, because that would’ve been a waste of both time and money.

Also, I can’t believe this book got even close to being nominated for an award award, much less to actually win one?? Rest just feels so goddamn wrong :/

Holy. Shit. I’ll be the first to say that I wasn’t totally sure about this series after red rising, and almost didn’t pick up the second one because i felt it was lacking some punch in the writing. But oh man am I glad i finished this.

In my opinion this may be one of the all time best series climaxes/finales I’ve read. The book turns the dials up to 1000 on brutality, writing, and finding beauty in the darkness. I loved that I had no clue where this was going or who, if anyone, would survive when all was said and done. And while I’m not usually a fan of the particular trope that was the very final reveal, it was absolutely perfect here.

Definitely the best book of the original trilogy. I personally failed to connect or care about any of the characters. I mainly read this to say I finished it.

Pacing saved this book. If it was any harder to read I would have struggled to finish it.

I read the large print edition because that’s all they had available at my local library and that had many editing and errors. Loads of words missing or repeated. Was quite annoying.

  • A lot of fighting, as is to be expected of the last book in a YA trilogy
  • All the battling wasn't as interesting as I hoped it would be, apart from a few notable exceptions
  • Really liked the beginning and the end, but a lot of the stuff in between was just alright
  • Maybe I was just burnt out on this series though? I read over 1200 pages of it in two days, wouldn't be too surprising
