Letto evidentemente in un periodo sbagliato perché pur non essendo molto lungo l'ho trovato molto impegnativo e alla fine mi sono quasi costretta a finirlo. Alcune cose molto belle, non facile da digerire emotivamente e soprattutto ho notato in alcuni passi dei pensieri e dei termini velatamente misogini che ovviamente non mi hanno reso la lettura più facile. Mi aspettavo molto di più!

summary: what if there's a guy and he was in a situation...
have fallen in and out of sleep over the course of this book, what with too much ramblings and unnecessary details (and commas!). the first two chapters were interesting, the rest was such a drag tho. almost DNF'ed.

The plot involves a ghostwriter names Victor who has a rendezvous with a woman at her apartment while her husband is on a trip to London. They are about to make love when suddenly she feels unwell and within a few minutes (?) she dies. With her toddler asleep in the other room, Victor is at a loss for what to do. He wants to do the right thing but also to melt into the wall, yet overshadowing that decision is the ancient urge to understand and tell the story.
Great details, lots of Madrid noir, stalking and lurking, a wild late-emerging subplot, a king and a horserace.
Marias loves long, winding passages of rumination and extrapolation that are often enchanting but occasionally fatiguing, but nevertheless worthwhile.

Beautiful phrases, allusions (and direct references) to Shakespeare, and a noir-like plot. Like something Marlowe would describe if he'd studied English at university in Spain.
The internal monologues run on a bit longer than they need to in places, but if you push through there is a lot to enjoy.

Kitaba dair hoşuma giden bir hayli detay var, favorilerimi paylaşmak istedim. Kitabın sonunda Marías eklediği notta kitabın adını Shakespeare’in yazdığı Kral 3. Richard oyununda geçen ünlü bir sahneden aldığını söylüyor. Aslında sekiz bölümden oluşan bu seride Shakespeare, 1399-1485 yılları arasında İngiltere tahtına çıkan altı kralın yönetimleri sırasında yaşananları kurguyla harmanlayarak yazıyor. Serinin dördüncü kitabında bahsedilen sahnede ( 5. Perde, 3.Sahne) Kral 3. Richard tahtını korumak için savaş meydanına çıkmaya hazırlandığı gece boyunca o zamana dek öldürdüğü aile üyelerinin hayaletleri tarafından sıkıştırılır; Herbiri Yarın Savaşta Beni Düşün ya da benzeri cümleler kurarak Richard’a seslenir. I fell in and out of love with this book multiple times as I read it. The conceit—a married woman you hardly know suddenly falls ill and dies in bed next to you moments before you were going to sleep with her—is ripe. Who doesn't love a good meditation on death? Many of the ideas (memory, legacy, history, chance, determinism, perspective) offered intriguing points of reflection. We are our own archivists, gathering meaningless data that will be lost in a second soon enough.
But when the analogies and metaphors I had underlined in the early pages cropped up again and again, they started to lose their luster. This book needed a better editor, I thought to myself. Much of the middle section dragged, though it had its moments.
Then the final act: the confrontation. The repetition swelled as the experiences of the two men (the husband and the would-be lover) lined up. I see what you're after, Marías. But I still found many the repetitive parenthetical asides to be heavy-handed and a bit too convenient. (Don't hold it against me.)

Me ha gustado mucho. La acción es lenta, pasan muy pocas cosas, pero da lo mismo. Lo que más me gusta de Marías es cómo cuenta las cosas y este libro está escrito tan bien que para cuando te das cuenta llevas 300 páginas y han pasado dos cosas.
