literally the most boring book I've ever come across

The opening is really good but from there it just gets ridiculous. The characters motivations and actions don't make a whole lot of sense and that's not helped by the fact that Marias feels the need to so many words to get where he's going. I think his musings are supposed to be deep and profound but they just came across as annoyingly pretentious and quite simplistic to the point where I mostly skimmed through the 2nd half.

Reminded me a lot of The Unconsoled. Stream of consciousness, bad dream, unreliable narrator who is a prick. Some of it was interesting—particularly the commentary on language.
