Great collection! Although there were some recurring patterns, every story was different and unsettling. Apart from being just nice, ghostly stories, they also provided, together with the explanations from the author, an interesting insight into Japanese culture.

I associate Japanese ghost stories with scary movies like The ring or The Grudge, but these stories were delicate and gracious.
Instead of reading this, I listed to it on audio and I kind of regret it. I feel that audio doesn't really suit the format of the book so much. There are a lot of footnotes, drawings that needs to be explained and switches between the author's comments and stories that I found hard to follow.
All in all, I don't regret picking this up, but it doesn't get more than 2 starts from me.

The collection has a solid introduction, and I found the stories interesting. They voice Hearn uses to relay stories is often pretty dry, which serves to give the intended air of an academic recording folk tales.

Some of the stories were very good, but most were pretty bland and repetitive.

Obsessed with Roku-rokubi (ghosty guys who sometimes have long necks or even heads floating away from their bodies)
