Waris Dirie’s Desert Flower opened my eyes to the deeply disturbing practice of FGM, something I had no knowledge of before. Her raw, harrowing account was both shocking and deeply traumatizing. Despite this, I was in awe of her resilience and unshakable determination. Her nomadic spirit—constantly searching for something greater—acted as a guiding force in her life, pushing her to break free from her comfort zone time and time again. What struck me most was how she longed for the simplicity of her desert life even at the height of her success. In those harsh conditions, she found lessons in life, contentment, and happiness that stayed with her no matter where she went. There’s so much to be learned from her strength and courage. Waris, you are a force of nature! So glad I read this.
P.S. As much as I admire her story, the book’s execution left much to be desired.
