Many Many years ago, when I was a wee little shitling (just turned 13). In the early 2000s, I saw a trailer for a book. This trailer to be exact:- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZgDNuYgVcU

And it set me off on a journey of reading gamebooks - and getting me into TTRPGs.

This book to me is a classic. It's a maze of death in different ways BUT it is rewarding when you manage to do it. Plus I remember reading it with some paper and pencils drawing the map as I went along, I miss those days.

I enjoyed it so much that to this day I still have this book with the set I saved up for all of them years ago. The fact that I have managed to hold onto the set for nearly 19 years says something to me about a book/set.

I was going to give this 3 stars initially but then I realized that there was something that bugged me during all my adventures under Firetop Mountain. That thing is nowadays called "Dungeon Ecology" and it has to do with what/who you can find in a dungeon and the why and how. Little made sense in this game book. I can't comment with more detail on that because I would spoil it for people who haven't read it. But at the end, if you ask WHY about most rooms you are left without a logical answer and that's a big minus for me.

Was such an immersive experience, really used a bit of brain power and would deffo recommend drawing out a map for when you get lost in the maze. Helped to distract away from the strange things happening in the world at the moment.

Nostalgic series that stands the test of time.

I love that this book exists and helped launch game books as a thing. However, this is basically just a boring dungeon crawl. There aren’t many meaningful choices - mostly you are choosing right or left with no reason to prefer one over the other.

It feels weird writing a review for a book where I’ve probably only read half of the pages and completely out of order…

A fun little adventure with a very old school feel, and with its back to basic stylings comes the absolute chaos of what can happen in this dungeon. A lot of what happens doesn’t really make sense but at least it’s varied.

Definitely make a map though, the maze near the end is a nightmare.

Got lost in a maze, defeated a dragon, killed a warlock, didn't have enough keys to open the chest... Loved playing/reading this adventure!
