This isn't the best Jhumpa Lahiri, but it's still a good book. I learned some Indian history, I felt with some characters. But I don't think the themes came through all the way.

Audio book.

While I enjoyed it, definitely my least favourite of Lahiri's so far.

How this didn't win the Booker and blast the vexing The Luminaries (a joyless "artistic" exercise)out of contention is beyond me.

It's been 3 years since I read the book and the story comes so easily to me. Pick this one up for a story that is rich in the politics of the time as well as the lives of the individuals who are swept by its tide along with their private hopes and miseries.

A meditative study of family, time, and place. The raw symbolism of The Lowland rips into your flesh and tears at your heart. Each character, though flawed, explores an element of pain which can not be ignored.

Disappointed, this was a real commitment of time to read and in the end I was left unfulfilled. Not sure if I'm the target audience for Pulitzer Prize winning books.

Sadly nostalgic book of what life and idealism is reduced to as one separates geographically and in age from pivotal moments in youth and politics
