Classic Fidelma, the one heroine that plays a major role and is extremely intelligent. She puts together all the bits and pieces and unveils them at the end, as usual. Nothing terribly original, but the mystery is not easy to untangle, as the knots are complex. The ending is surprising and exciting, as Fidelma does it again.

This may be the best historically backed book I have ever read. You really do notice that the author is actually a historian. And he does sprinkle in some random bits of information about early medieval Irland, just to show off his knowledge. I found the first two thirds of the book intriguing and mysterious. There were so many questions and I had developed quite a few theories. However many of them were crushed as we are introduced to some weird conspiracy in the last third of the book which is connected to the initial "mystery". It makes sense at the end but I was quite disappointed how the mystery was unraveled and it all felt a bit rushed. Fidelma, who "just knows things" and seems to be without flaw, just magically connects every information she obtained throughout the book and I couldn't quite understand how in the world she came to some conclusions based on so little evidence. Ultimately I was left a bit unsatisfied, but I still very much enjoyed the read.

Historical background and setting continue to be big strengths for this series rather than strong plotting, though liked this one better than the preceding volume. Who knew 7th century Ireland was so enlightened when it came to equality in the law? I look forward to future reading in Tremayne's Celtic series!

It's my first venture into the Sister Fidelma series, and I was quite intrigued by the setting of a mystery in medieval Ireland. I enjoyed the author's nuanced ways of blending in Irish customs and the discrepancies of the churches into the story via character discourses. For a good majority of the book, the author takes his time to use the mystery as a fuel to soak us into the world, weaving his red herrings and the cast of eccentric characters. It's almost a character essay, and I enjoyed every bit of it. And then, in the third act when the other shoe starts to drop, Fidelma puts on her Miss Marple-esque hat, and all that magic just deflates.

It is, perhaps, this sudden change in the treatment of the story, narration-wise, that makes the final, customary detective-reveals-it-all speech tedious and convincing only in places. Fidelma is an astute observer and bright spirited, but I think the story could've used a more powerful manner of revelation in the end, something in line with the authorial voice that the book had at the start.

Tremayne is a terrible writer and Sister Fidelma is practically perfect in every way. Despite those flaws it was a good read and I enjoyed the story.

I like the concept. I like learning bits of Celtic lore and history while reading a light mystery. But I don't like being lectured. He's a poor writer, unfortunately. Dry, scholarly, at the wrong times, without any ability to integrate. He keeps stopping the narrative to give little lectures, which would be ok if he didn't have to repeat the lecture about what a rechtaire is every time he mentions one.

The fourth Sister Fidelma novel, The Subtle Serpent, opens with a double mystery. Fidelma is on her way to the religious community of The Salmon of the Three Wells, located within the kingdom of her brother King Colgu, to investigate the murder of an unknown woman - her body found naked, headless, in a well, clutching a simple cross. While en route, the ship she is travelling on encounters an abandoned Gaullish merchant ship. Her cargo holds are empty, there are signs of blood recently shed, and perhaps worst of all, in one of the cabins Fidelma finds a book she had given as a gift to her dear companion of earlier adventures, Brother Eadulf.

As Fidelma seeks to solve both mysteries, she becomes aware that there is something very strange going on in the abbey and the surrounding community. There is open conflict between the abbess, Draigen, and the local chief, Adnar. Draigen herself is both arrogant and ambitious, and seems at times to be trying to impede Fidelma’s investigation. The abbey itself seems subtly wrong to Fidelma - there are few older members, and one of them, Bronach, is treated with much disrespect, as is Bronach’s protegee, Berrach, a severely disabled sister. Two sisters are missing - overdue to return from an errand - and though the younger one’s physical description matches the body, the abbess insists it cannot be her. And there is something strange about the abbey itself - sometimes strange noises seem to issue from the earth below the abbey, which Draigen says are the result of tidal water filling caves that riddle the area.

Meanwhile, Ross has been investigating the abandoned ship, and has discovered that it was brought to shore nearby, by a party of Irish warriors of the clan Ui Fidgenti, who pit the crew to work in the local copper mines. The ship itself vanished overnight while the Ui Fidgenti celebrated.

Fidelma finds things to concern her at Asnar’s stronghold as well. Draigen’s former husband, Ferbal, a bitter misogynist, lives in the compound. Adnar has guests - Torcan, prince of Ui Fidgenti and his companions, and Olcan, son of the local overlord, both families with ambition and grudes against her brother. And everywhere, in the abbey, on the abandoned vessel, even on the books in the abbey, Fidelma finds traces of an unusual red clay, commonly found in copper mines.

Another satisfying mystery from Peter Tremayne, complex and rich in atmosphere, drawing on both Irish history and legend, and the history of the Irish and Roman churches and the conflicts between them. Fidelma must uncover the secrets of the community, and of politics and greed, to solve the mysteries, and then, perhaps most satisfying of all, she sets forth fir new adventures with Eadulf at her side.

By the fourth of Tremayne's Sister Fidelma novels, she is well-established in the affections of fans. Having a female detective in a medieval crime novel is rather unusual, given the general attitude to women in the period. Fidelma is hardly a normal woman, being a king's sister, a nun, and a highly trained advocate in the Irish courts. Although Tremayne continually emphasises the humanity of traditional Irish law - particularly as a contrast to its rival Roman church law - I find it a little unconvincing. I don't know much about sixth century Irish life (and the blurb does say that Tremayne is an expert), but no matter how humane the legal code was, I suspect it was considerably less so in practice. The whole setting appears to be considerably idealised, though as I know much more about Ireland after the Viking raids which are supposed to have severely damaged the country's economy according to some sources, it may well have been a much richer place than the squalid barbarianism reported from later on in the Middle Ages.

The recurring characters are well-drawn and charming, the puzzles are actually quite difficult, and they are written in a pleasant prose style.

In this particular novel, Sister Fidelma is summoned to investigate the discovery of the headless, naked body of an unknown woman, found in the well of an abbey with a cross tied to one hand and a pagan curse to the other. All is not well in the abbey; its imperious abbess, Draigen, has a great hatred of her brother Adnár, who is the local secular authority. He and his spiritual adviser, Febal, in turn make accusations about her. When Fidelma discovers that Febal was once Draigen's husband - the story is set before the Irish chuch really accepted the supremacy of Rome, and before even the Roman Catholic church ordered its priests and nuns to be celibate - she realises that there is a long history of problems at the abbey. With the death of a second victim, the abbey's librarian Síomha, and the near lynching of a disabled nun as a witch believed to have caused the deaths by magic, Fidelma realises that this is a mystery which must be solved quickly.
