Fast-moving, and similar in feel to the Dresden Files (though not in plot or character). Let's just say I was glad I had book 3 already lined up, and I had someone impatiently waiting for me to finish this one so he could read it!

If the mystery and story wasn't so interesting, I would have rated this book 2 stars - Adam, you are unbelievably whiny. Also! Did you know that Adam is a Level 8 telepath? That hasn't been mentioned almost a hundred times.

[Edit: oops, added something from book 3.]

I enjoyed this a little more than the first book as the author spent fewer pages on the flaws of the main character. Can a person be too flawed? Still too much introspection for my tastes, though, and several times I shouted for Adam to man-up. Too weak and emotional. The ending was only so-so. It seemed there were major plot holes throughout but, perhaps, I missed something.

The story begins with Adam heading to a crime scene of a woman murdered, Emily Hamilton. A familiar woman to Adam... a woman from his past. Not in that way... jeesh. She was a past student of his and one of three reasons for his being kicked out of the Guild. Turns out he wasn't kicked out due to his Satin addiction, but he had inadvertently destroyed three of his students abilities. Since Adam destroyed her life, he feels that it's up to him to find Emily's killer. As a sidebar, Adam is also consulting on truck hijackings.

There were aspects of this book that I liked and some that I didn't. The things I liked to start with. We learn more about Adams past and how he came to work for the police. Also, why tech is just plain scary. The scariness that is the Guild and better yet, why the Enforcers are the boogeymen/women of the Guild. I would not want to meet an Enforcer in a dark alley.

The things I didn't like. The book needed tighter editing. Usually, I don't care much about the editing, but there were some that bothered me (i.e. Adam unbuckling his belt twice without rebuckling and a person "shuttered"). Adams infatuation with Cherabino. Most of his interactions with her ended up with him drooling over her. I'm not a big fan of her character. I have a nagging suspicion that part of his feelings might have to do with him viewing her as his savior since she aided in pulling him out of the gutter, so to speak. Aspects of the investigation. Cops like Bellury expecting Adam to think like a cop when Adam isn't even one nor to my knowledge has he had the training.

Sharp was still a good read and I am looking forward to reading the third book.

I absolutely adore this series now.
True, there isn't amazing connection with the characters, but I've finally come to like Adam and when he hurts, or thinking about relapsing I get so emotional. He just needs people in his corner!!
I feel like the world building is better-- I understand more, so that is a bit of an improvement.

I liked the mystery, but I kinda guessed some things while finding others not totally available to guess. So, not a "traditional" mystery, but there is still enough to guess for people who like to.

I'm very much looking forward to reading the next book!

I did it! I finally finished this book. I think it took me about a year.

It's not really my style of book, but my husband read the series and he thought I would like it. I liked the first book very much; but, the second book is not sitting well with me.

There is a lot of detail in this book & a lot of build up to the climax - which doesn't happen till the book is almost over. I get the technique; if you have the good part at the end the reader will want to go pick up the next.

Not happy with:
1) I didn't like the debt portion of this story. I'm pulling for Adam to get out of his old ways; but, it seems like he always gets dragged back into it.

2)I'd like to see am take down someone on his own other than have Cherabino rush in and save the day.

3) I'd like him for once to have his full powers & not be so drained by trying to do one thing once.

Happy with:
1) The little bit of back story we got on Kara & Adam.

2) The case was pretty good & had me wondering who was behind it all. Hope they catch him.

Overall: Not too excited about this book. Would probably not read it again & not sure I would read the third.

I enjoyed the second book in this series. Adam is a realistic character dealing with addiction and recovery who finds himself an outsider in both the world of telepaths and the world of normals. The mystery was interesting enough to keep my attention and the solution was not too obvious nor did it seem to come out of left field. Adam continues to grow as a character and the author continues to develop the world she has created. I am looking forward to continuing the series.
