I loved this. Was totally hooked from finding out what it was about. Liked the concept. Would definitely say it’s my favourite of the last few. Even if I am a fanboy & kind of love most of them & just really like the others.

QUICK TAKE: I miss old school Chuck Palahniuk!! Invisible Monsters Chuck Palahniuk. I really haven't enjoyed one of Chuck's books since SNUFF, and unfortunately, I struggled through THE INVENTION OF SOUND. The story was a bit all over the place and confusing, the characters irredeemable (even for a CP book), and I felt so unsatisfied with the ending. I'd skip this one and re-read INVISIBLE MONSTERS or CHOKE or LULLABY or HAUNTED...

Oh man. I'd almost lost faith in Chuck after reading pretty much all of his early works (which idled at fantastic), then being thoroughly let down by one of his later ones (Damned). I took a chance on The Invention of Sound and it paid off.
This was a quick read when I was able to actually read it, but, as with any good Chuck book, I had to take breaks for hours, even days sometimes. Not as much in this one as in some others (Haunted) but that to me is a sign of him really getting under your skin.
There's nearly always a twist at the end of his books, and so while I was sort of trying to figure out what this one was going to be, I wad completely dumbfounded by this one to the point I hadn't been by some of his greatest earlier works like Lullaby. I can't say it was as mind-blowing as Fight Club as that was the first twist I ever knew about, but it restored my faith in Palahniuk as an author who's still got books in him that will leave you wondering just what the hell you just read.
