This book was the best book of the series so far. The romance between the characters had a nice build and their connection was strong. However, I think the best part of this book was how chilling the villain was. He was dark and ruthless. I also thought that the climax at the end was especially well done.

Scandalous Desires
(Maiden Lane: #3)
Written by Elizabeth Hoyt
2011; 393 Pages
Genre: historical romance

★★★★

Finally it is Silence and Mickey's story. Silence has been widowed and has been taking of an orphaned girl, Mary Darling. When she is summoned my Mickey - a pirate - she discovers that the child she loves so much is Mickey's biological daughter. Mary's mother has died and left her in Mickey's care. Mickey gives Silence another ultimatum: she can stay with him and be with his daughter or never see her again. Last time when Silence had taken his ultimatum she was left with a ruined repetition. Yet, her love for Mary and wanting to keep her safe is so strong she comes to stay.

I really enjoyed the banter and romance between Silence and Mickey. We have seen their chemistry in earlier books so I was excited to see that they had their book. I really love the way Silence cares for Mary as well. A fun romantic reader.

I think Maiden Lane is a good soapy time, and even when it's "meh" it's still entertaining, but Fun Fact: I read so much of this book with my face crinkled up like I was smelling something bad. I don't know if Elizabeth Hoyt was channeling her inner pirate when writing these sex scenes but she took the prose and descriptions into places that made my treasure chest audibly clamp shut. A 350+ page lesson in how to make a half-Irish pirate unappealing.

I am stunned and absolutely blown away by this book and the transformation of both of these main characters. I went from feeling lukewarm about both Mick and Silence - and indeed, even strongly disliking them in Books 1 and 2 - to fully supporting each of their journeys in this book and cheering for their triumphs by the end.

I've been on the verge of tears for this entire story. This is the most broken man I've ever read about and I was totally moved by the way this Beauty and the Beast-esque tale played out. I mean he was in love with a butterfly.

Typical heroine whos perfect and pure and innocent with maternal instincts. I guess it's one step up since she's not a virgin as she's a widow. Still her lack of agency is disturbing.

Scandalous Desires
4 Stars

Following the build up to Silence and Mickey’s romance in the previous books, Scandalous Desires lives up to expectations barring one or two small issues.

Charming Mickey O’Connor is a pirate who makes no effort to conceal his autocratic, decadent and ruthless nature. He is also haunted by the memory of Silence Hollingbrook, the gracious and sedate widow whose reputation and marriage he so callously destroyed. So, when the opportunity arises for Mickey to once again have Silence in his life, he grasps it with both hands.

Despite his rakish charms, it takes time to warm up to Mickey but once his traumatic past it revealed, it is impossible not to fall for him as Silence does. Speaking of Silence, her prim and proper ways conceal a passionate heart and tremendous capacity for love that slowly chips away at Mickey’s cold-hearted facade. Silence manages to charm not only Mickey but everyone in his household from the sullen guard to the cantankerous cook to the smelly bulldog.

Mickey and Silence’s romance is suitably steamy and the suspense plot is fast paced with an action packed climax and a villain who gets his just deserts. Nevertheless, the ultimate revelation of the Ghost’s identity falls somewhat flat and I hope that the next book will contribute more to this storyline.
