A deeply uncomfortable look at the honesty of history, specifically surrounding the plantation south and slavery. Expertly well-done. The horror was in the hidden truths of the story. Good commentary on plantation tourism and living history as well.

this was a decent read for me!! i loved the premise and there are some beautifully written pieces in here, but i’m ending up giving it 3 stars. i felt a little disconnected from the characters and felt like the story was getting pretty choppy especially towards the end. still a great read though.

Whew. There were parts of this book that were absolutely soul crushing.

Mira visits her hometown when her childhood best friend, Celine, who she hasnt spoken to since high school, is getting married. The only issue is that Celine is getting married at plantation that holds many painful memories for her personally and was the site of gruesome treatment and murders in its past. Convinced by Celine to go, Mira is met by her haunted past as well as the plantations devastating past.

Really 3.5 stars! This was a spooky and intense read! Very Octavia Butler/ Lovecraft “sun down country” vibes. This was a quick horror read recommendation and I’m glad I gave it a listen.
