This was such a sweet read that handled the complexity of death and grief, balanced by moments of sweetness and humor. We got to see Wallace learn and grow after losing his life of being a jerk, but even his foil characters weren’t perfect. Hugo, who shows Wallace the possibilities of being a compassionate, kind human, also struggle with being to passive and having poor boundaries with folks who are acting badly but for whom he has empathy (“Empathetic, almost to a fault.”)

I also love that the book celebrates friendship and familial love, as well as romantic, and emphasized the power of found family.

I think the narrator for the audiobook version did a great job as well.

Tj Klune beautifully conveyed an imaginative scenario exploring death and the world in between our life and the afterlife. It was healing to read and i feel like almost anybody can gain something from it. I found myself almost crying numerous times. I really enjoyed all the characters honestly. I REALLY appreciate Hugo’s character being a black queer man who owns a tea shop. I thought it was beautiful. I love black men being portrayed with soft characteristics. All the main characters i found were incredibly likable. If i have to make one critique,
Spoiler i didnt like that the manager used words like “bastard”, it was hard for me to believe that an omnipresent, ethereal being that assists with the passing of human life to the afterlife would use jargon like that personally. It slightly took me out.

I did not really like this one as much as I liked The House in the Cerulean Sea.  This is the type of book that you really have to be in a particular mindset.  I also really didn't enjoy the ending.  Without going into spoilers, I would have preferred a more bittersweet ending.  I felt like it was too contrived and didn't make me happy in the least.  I think there are definitely people who would love this book but for me it wasn't the book for me.

I would rate this more than 5 if I could. Everyone should read this book.
